Destination Las Palmas de G.C.

The capital, one of the cities with the best climate in the world, stands out for its geographical location: it is the cultural and economic bridge between Europe, Africa, and America.

THE COSMOPOLITAN CITY OF THE CANARY ISLANDS

Vacacional Ciudad Jardín is located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the most cosmopolitan city of the Canary Islands and one of the cities with the best climate in the world. Its privileged geographical location makes the capital a cultural and economic bridge between Europe, Africa, and America. Air connections place the island just two and a half hours from Madrid, four from major European cities, and six from America. The capital is considered the economic hub of the archipelago due to its role as a mandatory crossroads between three continents. Its intense commercial activity makes it the shopping center. Traders from distant places like India or the Far East, who have chosen the city for their commercial activities, coexist with traditional shops and modern shopping centers.
The city reveals its richest identity through its port, the Port of La Luz and Las Palmas. The port is characterized by the constant flow of people, goods, and services. Undoubtedly, the capital, open to the world, is a sign of mestizaje. In this district, you will also find the Market of the Port, one of the five best gastro-markets in Spain. It stands out for its beautiful wrought iron architecture as well as the quality of its products, including our famous “papas con mojo”. In the Puerto district, you will also find the famous “Poema del Mar,” the new major aquarium of the capital. You will feel like you are underwater in a separate world, enjoying over 350 animal species living here. The capital hosts important international festivals, such as classical music, film, and opera. The cultural and artistic events held here position Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a reference in the islands and the rest of the country. Examples include the carnival, jazz festival, and the Theater, Music, and Dance Festival. The cultural richness extends to a vast network of museums, exhibition halls, auditoriums, and theaters. Notably, the Pérez Galdós Theater, named after the illustrious son of Vegueta.

TRIANA AND VEGUETA: HISTORICAL FOOTPRINT

The historic neighborhood of Triana, part of the Centro district, is one of the most charming places in the capital. Here, you can enjoy urban strolls through cobblestone streets and picturesque corners with historical flavor. The well-known Calle Mayor de Triana stands out for its architectural beauty and vibrant commercial activity. In the old and historic district of Vegueta, you can see the traces left by kings, explorers, and distinguished visitors. A walk through this colonial-style neighborhood is like traveling back in time in a city with over five centuries of history. The old town has witnessed the presence of historical figures like Christopher Columbus and has suffered from the greed of pirates of various nationalities due to its strategic location. Additionally, its buildings have been the backdrop for the birth of renowned individuals such as Benito Pérez Galdós and Alfredo Kraus. In this area, you can discover places, buildings, and monuments of interest like the Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana, one of the city's most emblematic spots, which houses the most important example of Canarian religious architecture: the Cathedral of Canarias. The Gabinete Literario, Casa de Colón, Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, Museo Canario, and the famous Market of Vegueta are just a few of the must-see destinations during your tour of the center.

A PLACE FOR SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS

Gran Canaria is undoubtedly an ideal place for outdoor sports in direct contact with nature. The friendly sea and wind, along with the average water temperature of 20ºC, make the island a perfect destination for water sports enthusiasts such as surfing, bodyboarding, or kitesurfing. For example, La Cícer, at the tip of our Las Canteras Urban Beach, is the island's most famous surf spot. Naturally, Gran Canaria is also admired by diving, fishing, and sailing enthusiasts. The island's prestigious international regatta field in light sailing highlights the maritime character of the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is also part of the World Surf Cities Network. However, Gran Canaria is also a refuge for those who love rugged mountains, greenery, and moisture. The island offers an extensive network of hiking trails accessible to everyone, with over 300 kilometers of Royal Paths traversing the interiors of 33 protected natural areas. Naturally, you can explore the island's corners by bike, a healthy and original way to get to know it. You can choose the difficulty level, duration, and route that best suits you: from a relaxed ride around the capital and along the avenues to challenging your physical condition in the mountainous and rugged landscapes.

LAS CANTERAS: THE TREASURE OF OUR CAPITAL

It is definitely a privilege to enjoy beaches and ports during your stay that not only possess the innate beauty of the Canary Islands but also stand out for their quality. In Gran Canaria, the prestigious Blue Flag has been awarded to Maspalomas, Meloneras, and Playa del Inglés, among others.
Playa del Inglés, with its fine golden sand and calm waters, stretches over three kilometers and has become one of the most famous beaches in Spain.
Certainly, Maspalomas will take your breath away. From Playa del Inglés to the old Lighthouse at its tip, Maspalomas embraces the Charca and the stunning Dunes, declared a special nature reserve. However, the jewel of the capital is Las Canteras: one of the most recognized and unique urban beaches in Europe. Located just a kilometer and a half from our apartments, the beach invites relaxation, disconnection, and the practice of all kinds of nautical activities and sports. Las Canteras proudly features "La Barra", a natural rock barrier only about 200 meters from the shore that protects much of the beach from the tides. This unique stone formation allows us to enjoy the beach’s marine reserve and walk on the water during low tide. At one end of the beach, in addition to La Cícer, you’ll find the iconic Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, one of the most distinctive buildings in the capital, home to the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra and host of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival and the Canary Islands Music Festival, among others. At the other end, you’ll discover the terraces and fresh fish restaurants of La Puntilla. Continuing along the avenue, you will reach the natural pools of the El Confital Natural Reserve.
